A blockhouse for artillery was built on the waterfront in front of Reginald's Tower (WA009-005001-) sometime after 1560. It was a low, stone-faced oval platform with embrasures for eight guns according to 17th-century maps. It was described as being 'the lower platform supplied with seven or eight great guns, well mounted' by Mr. Dean Stanhope in the 1680s (Walton 1987, 32). The blockhouse was dismantled in 1710 (Smith 1746, 172). (Kerrigan 1985, 15)
