Tomb — chest tomb in Mothel

In the S transept of the Augustinian abbey of Mothel (WA007-010001-). A limestone side panel (H 0.5m; L 0.59m; T 0.14-0.18m) of a chest tomb. A small rectangular section (dims. 10.5m x 11.5m) has been cut from the lower sinister corner. The panel is decorated with the symbols of the Passion. There is a central crown with very pronounced thorns, with a heart at the centre which is pierced by a spear. Crossing the spear shaft, but not the heart, is a long pole surmounted by a sponge. The upper sinister side has a scourge, below which there is a cock on a pillar or a pot, the latter being partially destroyed by the cut away section. The upper dexter side has a pincer with three nails, below which there is a hammer with a claw. Running from top to bottom on the far dexter side is a narrow ladder. The panel has a plain raised border along the dexter side and bottom. Above the panel, running the length of the upper surface of the stone, there is an inscription in raised black letter script, within a plain border. Another part of the inscription, the end of a word, is at right angles to it. Stylistically the tomb dates to the latter part of the 16th century.
