What is recorded here

Mrked as an embanked enclosure on the Grand Jury map of Co. Waterford (NLI: 16 J 4) dated 1819, and indicated faintly as an enclosure on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Situated on a gentle N-facing slope. Oval grass-covered area (dims. 42.5m N-S; 36m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 2-3m; int. H 0.6m at N (downslope) to 2m at S; ext. H 0.8m at S to 1.6m at N) with internal and external stone-facing. The entrance (Wth 2.2m) at SW is probably modern and an external fosse (Wth 2-3m; D 0.5m) recorded in 1979 (SMR file) can no longer be traced. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 4th October, 2011
