According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) in 'Gort Ichullen' in 1640 there 'stands the walls of a little castle' under the proprietorship of 'Sir Richard Everard of Everards Castle Knight & Richard Keating fo Nickolstown Esqr Irish Papists' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 339). This castle is unlocated within the northern part of the townland of Gortacullin.
