What is recorded here

On flat ground in gently undulating terrain. Somewhat levelled enclosure, consisting of a raised roughly square area (dims. 30.8m N-S; 29.2m E-W) enclosed by a scarp (H 0.2m) and wide, flat fosse (W 5.7m; D 0.55m). This moated site was inspected in 1958 when it was overgrown with scrub, it appeared to have an inner bank c. 1.2m wide and at least 1m above the fosse (OPW Correspondence). Within the enclosure there was a castle, 'Balllinhalla Castle' (TS087-029002-), of which no visible trace remains above ground. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 25 November

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
