On flat ground in gently undulating terrain. Somewhat levelled enclosure, consisting of a raised roughly square area (dims. 30.8m N-S; 29.2m E-W) enclosed by a scarp (H 0.2m) and wide, flat fosse (W 5.7m; D 0.55m). This moated site was inspected in 1958 when it was overgrown with scrub, it appeared to have an inner bank c. 1.2m wide and at least 1m above the fosse (OPW Correspondence). Within the enclosure there was a castle, 'Balllinhalla Castle' (TS087-029002-), of which no visible trace remains above ground.
