The Priory or hospital of St. John the Evangelist was founded in Carrick-on-Suir by William de Cantelo and his wife, Dionisia, c. 1240 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 343, 347). Afterwards, it became subject to the Hospital of St. Thomas of Acon, London (Lee 1966, 12-26; Lee 1996, 40). The 'priory' was granted to Thomas Butler, Earl of Ormond, in 1557 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 343, 347). According to the OS Letters it was situated on the banks of the River Suir (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 64-65 (173-5). It is currently not precisely located.
