According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) 'Halfe of colpe of Ballydeyne' was owned by 'James Mandevile...Esqre. Irish Papist' and upon his land stood 'a hansome little castle wanting repaire situate neere the River of Shewer' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 266). Also 'Ballydeyne is and was anciently held a Mannor in free and Comon Soccage from the Earle of Ormond with Suit of Court=leet and Court=Barron and severall other Privileges' (ibid.). The castle was provisionally located to Ballydine House, on the N bank of the river Suir. The house, which was demolished c. 25 years ago, is now on the property of the Merck Sharp Dohme Plant. According to their security personnal there is no visible fabric of the house above ground.
