Tomb — effigial in Burgagery-Lands West

In 1615 the effigial tomb was noted in the choir of the Franciscan friary (TS083-019003-) (Shee and Watson 1975, 31. It was subsequently moved and appears to have been buried, as according to the OS letters the effigy was dug up in the yard S of the church a few years before 1840(O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 70-71 (212-13)). Towards the end of the 19th century the tomb was placed in its current location, a niche in the NW angle of the friary church (Shee and Watson 1975, 31). This is a Butler tomb bearing the figures of a knight and his lady. The figures are described in detail by Hunt (1974, vol. 1, 225-6, vol. 2, plate 167). The latin inscription in raised black letter script (expanded version) reads: HIC JACET JACOBUS GALDY FILIUS COMITIS ORMONIE ANNO DOMINI 1431 OBIIT PETRUS BUTTYLER...CLXIIII THOMAS PETRI BUTTYLER ANNO DOMINI MCCCCLXXVIII OBIIT EDMUNDUS THOME FILII(?) PETRI BUTTYLLER A di 1513. POER UXOR EDMUNDI BUTTYLLER ANNO DOMINI 1512. ORATE PRO ANIMABUS THOME BUTTYLLER ET ELENE BUTTYLER UXORIS EIUS.. .. QUIS HOC OPUS FIERI FECERUNT.. 153.. which translates as: Here lies James Galdy, son of the Earl of Ormond. In the year of the Lord 1431 died Peter Butler...1464. Thomas [Fitz] Peter Butler, in the year of the Lord 1478 died Edmund Thomas son of Peter Butler A.D. 1513 [Catherine] Poer wife of Edmund Butler, in the year of the Lord 1512. Pray for the souls of Thomas Butler and Ellen Butler his wife who had this work made in the year 153.. (Hunt 1974, vol. 1, 225-6). The OS letters also have a transcription of the inscription as it appears on the tomb (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, illustration 23). The side panel is from a 17th-century chest tomb (TS083-019087-).
