Graveslab in Burgagery-Lands West

In St. Mary's graveyard (TS083-019020-) there is an upright limestone graveslab (L 2.18m; Wth 0.82m; T 0.17m with under cut chamfered edge Wth 0.13m) against the outer wall of the N aisle (13.5m E of the NW angle of chancel) to Terence O'Donel and his wife Ellen White (Burke 1907, 268-9; Holland 1992, 200). The slightly worn decoration is described by Maher (1997, 67) as consisting of 'a ringed cross with bifid terminals. Emanating out from the angles are four diagonally disposed arms, with expanded terminals. The cross-head surmounts a fluted cross-shaft, which tapers slightly towards the top. It terminates in an elaborate pillar-base form. An heraldic shield occurs on either side of the cross-shaft, but there is no evidence to suggest that they bore any charges. An inscripton in Black Letter occurs along the top of the slab and on both its sides. Heweton (FitzGerald 1901-03, vol. 5, 256-7) transcribes and translated the inscription as follows: HIC JACET TERRENTIUS O/DONILL QUI OBIT 4 MARTI 1583 ET EJUS UXOR ELANA HUETT QUAE OBIIT 24/APRILIS 1591? EORUM FILII QUI HUNC TUMULU/FIERI FECERNT AO 1592 QUIB' SIT PROPITIUS OMNIPOTENS AMEN. (Here lies Terence O'Donill who died 4 March 1583 and his wide Helena? Huett who died 24 April 1591. Also all their sons who caused this tomb to be made in the year 1592, to whom may the Almighty be propitious. Amen)'.
