The Civil Survey (1654-6) records 'the walles of a Castle ... and a bawne about them' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 348). In 1641 Rochestown was beseiged for six weeks, during which time the beseigers '...brought a sow [seige engine] to the bawn wall, broke it down and approached the castle wall' (Grove White 1911, 10). The bawn associated with the tower house at Rochestown (TS082-055001-) is not visible above ground.
