In flat terrain c. 1km from the Lingaun River which flows N-S roughly along the line of the Kilkenny border. In 1319-20 there is mention of eleven burgages at Lynan which has been identified as Newtown (Lennon) by Bradley (1985, 59). The present village is named 'Newtown Lower' on the 1906 ed. OS 6-inch map and is currently named Faugheen. There is a 13th-century church (TS079-015001-) in ruins at the E end of the present village which is also depicted on the Down Survey (1655-6) map and mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-6). The Down Survey map also shows a cluster of a church and two houses at the W end of the village, roughly where the present RC church is located. There are no earthworks associated with this settlement visible at ground level.
