What is recorded here

On a SE-facing slope in undulating, hilly terrain, enclosed by pasture except to SW which is under tillage. Possible ringfort not marked on 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map and is depicted as an oval enclosure on 2nd (1901-05) ed. (diam. on 25-inch OS map 29m N-S; 19m E-W). It is planted with conifers, both internally, on inner bank and in immediate surrounding area. Monument defined by inner bank (Wth 1.7m crest, 3.1m base; H above int. 0.52m; H above fosse 0.73m), slight fosse (Wth 1m; D 0.4m) and outer bank (Wth 1.6m crest, 2.8m base; H above ext. 0.47m) visible from SW-W-NW. Gap in inner bank in WNW (Wth 2.15m). Inner bank is intact up to NW quadrant. N of this a mound of earth has been dumped on the line of the bank and there are no banks or fosse visible in NE or SE quadrant where there is some ground disturbance and the area is very overgrown with brambles. Gap (Wth 3.3m) in S. Post and wire fence runs outside the NW sector. Field boundary/wall skirts E side of the monument. Possible ringfort is vey poorly defined and planting with coniferous trees suggests that this may be a landscape feature. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
