Lyons (1934, 260-61) refers to a 'Fort in Newtownanner Demesne. Co. Tipperary OS 6-inch sheets 77 and 83. This seems to have been an Anglo-Norman fortification; it consisted of a bailey, formed by a rectangular bluff with steeply sloping sides, 162 feet [49m] long and 52 feet [16m] wide, on which in later times a castle was built: with an outer bailey 192 feet [58m] long on the western side'. The location of this possible earthwork within Newtownanner Demesne is unknown, however, it is possible that Lyons was misinterpreting landscape features associated with Newtownanner House. Lyons associates this possible earthwork with roads (TS077-106001-).
