Mentioned in the Papal Chancery Documents in 1210 and 1260 as 'Kilimelach' and 'Killyinlach' respectively and in the Extents of Irish Monastic Possessions in 1541 as 'Kylhemelagh/Kylehemenagh' (Ó Cearbhaill 2007, 148). According to Power (1908, 26), in Killemly townland there is a 'Cill Eimligh (or Imilligh) - “Church of the Lough Brink.” The site was discovered, with difficulty, by east side of the Cahir-Cashel road'. This church remains unlocated within this townland.
