Cist in Brenormore

In the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland (1858-9, vol. 5, 11) Dr Keatinge describes how a farmer, while removing 'masses of stone' from a field adjacent to a rath in Breanor, 'came to one [mass of stones] lying a few yards outside the rath: the soil covered the base of this one, as of others. However, on moving it, he and his workmen discovered that it was lying on a flag, which lay over four other flags, set perpendicularly in the ground. On removing the upper flag, they found a large heap of ashes in the inclosed space; but no remains of bones, or indeed, of anything else, though they carefully examined in and about it'. Though there are several ringforts and enclosures in the townland, it is possible that the rath referred to is TS071-022001- . Though no bones were found it seems likely that the monument described above is a cist and it has been listed by Waddell as such (1970, 129; 1990, 133).
