Old Deer Park — Kilburry West

In generally level pasture fields and occupied by village of Cloneen in N-sector. It is indicated as 'Old Deer Park' on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. The deerpark boundary appears to mostly concur with the present townland boundary of Kilburry West which is a polygonal area (map dims. c. 720m NNW-SSE; c. 700m ENE-WSW). However, the OS 6-inch map evidence suggests that this deerpark originally extended into the present Kilburry East townland and the former SE boundary of the deerpark also forms the NW boundary of the gardens of Kilburry House (TS071-012----). This deerpark would have been sub-rectangular (map dims. c. 860m NW-SE; c. 900m NE-SW), largely pentagonal in shape with some kinks and would have incorporated the stream which now forms the eastern boundary of Kilburry West townland. The southern property boundaries of Cloneen village partially form the NW boundary and the W-side is defined by wall (int. H 1.05m; ext. H 1.15m; T 0.6m) of selected rubble bonded by crude lime mortar and is covered in overgrowth in places. This also forms the townland boundary between Kilburry West and Milestown. There are some very low portions of this wall surviving toward the S end, however most is upstanding and well preserved. The straight SW boundary on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map is now a meandering intermittent boundary. The road or avenue to Kilburry house forms the NE boundary. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of revised upload: 30 September 2014
