Kilburry Ho. — Kilburry East

In flat terrain, in a farmyard with farm buildings, aligned NW-SE, to both E and S side forming a rectangular courtyard, with formal entrance opposite the house consisting of square stone piers surmounted by circular balls. Three-bay, two-storey over basement house (ext. L 18.4m; front wall T 0.87m), one room deep (int. Wth 6.24m) with a chimney on each gable. The house faces SE. A central staircase gives access to the first floor, with a mid-way landing where there was formerly a window in the rear wall. The house appears to be 18th century in date and there is a plaque on the S farm building bearing the initials J.C. Esq and the date 1742. However, there is a graveslab in Fethard which refers to 'Tho[ma]s Cleare of Kilburry who died there 11 of Jan. 1705 aged 66 yeares' (Mullally 1862-3, 249) and the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map indicates an 'Old Deer Park' (TS071-045----) c. 100m to the NW of, and associated with, Kilburry House. Furthermore the current owner stated that renovation works revealed that the original fenestration had consisted of smaller windows, which had been subsequently enlarged. These factors, combined with an above average wall thickness for an 18th-century house, would suggest that it may be late 17th century in date.
