Graveslab in Ballyhomuck

In the NE corner of the chancel of the medieval church (TS071-003001-) there is a recumbent 17th-century graveslab dedicated to Richard Bermingham who died on the 25th of June 1672. The Civl Survey (1654-6) lists Richard Brymiidgham (Bermingham) as the proprietor, in1640, of the lands of Ballyhomuck which consisted of 109 acres, of which 80 were arable, 24 acres of pasture and 5 acres of woodland, all of which was valued at 10 pounds per year (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 167). This graveslab probably belongs to the same Richard. The inscription runs around the edge of the slab and was carved in raised relief using Roman capitals with a cross carved in relief in the centre of the slab. The inscription reads: HIC JACET RICARDUS BERMINGHAM NOBILIS DE BALLYHOMICK QUI OBIT XXV JUNII ANNO DNI MDCLXXII (Brennan 1854-55, 214-15).
