What is recorded here

According to the OS Letters (1840) the Irish name for Redcity townland was 'Cathair Dhearg which signifies Red Fort' and 'the name was originally applied to a circular fort constructed of red sandstone, near which the old Church was built, but this fort is now completely destroyed and every trace of it removed off the surface of the land' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 67 (180)). As the church (TS070-041----) in Redcity is situated adjacent to Brodeen townland, the possible cashel could be located in either townland. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 28 January 2013
