Church (in ruins) — Templenoe (killeenasteena Par.)

On the eastern edge of a N-S ridge in undulating terrain, in pasture. Of a rectangular church (dims. 7.4m N-S int.; c. 24.5m E-W ext.), only a portion of the N wall (L 6.2m; int. H 2.6m; ext. H 3.4m; T 0.93m) at the E end, a longer length of the S wall (L 9.35m; int. H 2.6m; ext. H 3.05m; T 0.86m), from the centre to the E end, and a shorter portion (L 3.4m) towards the W end, survive. The upper section of the internal face of the S wall has largely broken away. The church is composed of roughly coursed limestone rubble bonded with a lime mortar. It was entered at the W end of the S wall, though the doorway is completely broken out but there are the remains of a drawbar-hole in the wall on the E side of the opening. The interior is rubble-filled, with collapsed masonry from the church itself but also augmented by field clearance. There is no evidence of an accompanying graveyard. According to the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 83) the church was in a similar state of preservation c. 1840, with both gables gone and 'Its graveyard is now a potatoe garden'. A circular enclosure (TS068-030001-) visible as a cropmark on satellite imagery (2021 Maxar Technologies, viewed May 2021), identified and reported by Jean-Charles Caillère, incorporates the church in the SW quadrant and may be defining an associated graveyard. Also visible on the satellite imagery is a possible larger outer curvilinear enclosure (TS068-030002-).
