The Civil Survey (1654-6) describes 'a Grinding Mill on the River Ara' in 'Lackennagullogelugh' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 29). The mill had been tentatively located to 'Lackeen Saw Mill' which is depicted on the 1901-05 ed. OS 6-inch map. However, though there is little physical remains of this saw mill there was no evidence to suggest that it was 17th century in date. The watermill remains unlocated within the townland of Lacken.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
