Moated site in Ardavullane

In improved pasture, on a N-facing slope; Panoramic views W-N-E. Sub-rectangular area (dims. 32m N-S; 29m E-W) defined by bank (Wth 6.9; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.8m) at S and scarp (Wth 4.8m; H 1.5m) to W, N and indented side to E. Scarp (Wth 13m; H 3.85m) is best preserved on N-side. Scarp indented (dims. c. 13m N-S; c. 9m E-W; D c. 1m) at E where it may have been quarried in antiquity. Base of scarp has been gouged out to create an oval depression (dims. 4m N-S; 8m E-W; D 0.2-0.5m) at NNW. Possible entrance (Wth 7.5m) at SW, where scarp is lower. Possible entrance (Wth 2m) at S, where there is a slight causeway across fosse. Fosse (Wth 8.6m; D 1.1m) is best preserved at S-side and fosse (Wth 8m; D 0.15m) is traceable ENE-E and SW-W. Monument is raised on its N-side to create a level interior. Interior is grass covered and uneven with a gentle N-facing slope. Large hollows to immediate NNW and c. 50m to ESE of monument. Linear banks to E may be the remains of old field boundaries. Stream is c. 28m to NNW.
