Enclosure in Horeabbey,loughnafina

In gently rolling terrain, c. 300m SE of the town of Cashel, c. 500m E of the Rock of Cashel and c. 200m N of Hore Abbey. Identified during the section of monitoring works on the Cashel Sewerage Scheme which ran parallel to and S of the Loughnafina/Horeabbey townland boundary (Henry 1998, unpublished report. The NW portion (chord 58m; max. Wth c. 17m) of the enclosure (total diam. c. 60m) is visible as a shallow fosse (Wth c. 1m) and an external bank (Wth 3m; H 0.3m) (ibid. 36). A mound (TS061-147----) was uncovered in the NE quadrant (ibid.). The enclosure is transected by a townland boundary wall running NE-SW, with the enclosure not visible at ground level SE of the boundary. The lack of visibility of the SE portion of the monument, both on the ground and on satellite imagery, is probably due to the extensive infilling to raise the level of the field for agricultural activity (ibid.). During excavation a V-shaped fosse (Wth 1.75m: D 0.85m), probably of the enclosure, was identified (ibid. 33). There were no finds to provide any date for the enclosure, however, it pre-dates the 13th/14th century as it was sealed with deposits which contained artifacts of this date (ibid.).
