Indicated — Longstone (kilcornan Par.)

In flat grassland with good views in all directions, castle site (58;040) 270m to N and church and graveyard (TS058-060---- and TS058-060001-) 195m to SW. House (TS058-041003-) in N quadrant is located 3m to the N of the enclosing fosse of the central house. This house in the centre of a ringfort (TS058-041001-) conists of a raised rectangular area (overall dims. 12m N-S x 22m E-W) divided into two rooms (int.dims. 10.5m N-S x 4.1m E-W) orientated on an E-W axis and enclosed by an earth and stone bank (top Wth 1m; base Wth 1.3m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.6m) and outer fosse (top Wth 3m; base Wth 1.3m; ext. D 0.3m) with possible entrance gap (Wth 1.8m) in the bank at N. Larger room to W measures internally 3.5m N-S x 8m E-W with smaller annexe type room to E measuring internally 2.5m N-S x 5m E-W. Both houses are in very good state of preservation and appear to be contemporary with the enclosure. The Civil Survey description of the lands of Kilcornan in 1640 describes an 'old castle irrepairable & some cabbins wast' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 364). It is possible that this reference is referring to the buildings within the ringfort, however this could also be a reference to an unlocated castle within the townland of Kilcornan. The two house footings within the ringfort do not appear to be the remains of a castle but are more likely to be domestic buidings of the ringfort.
