On flat bogland connecting the bog island of Derrynaflan and its monastery (TS054-002----) to the island of Derrynabrone. Roadway marked on 6-inch OS 6-inch map orientated on a NE-SW axis connecting the NE end of the monastery at Derrynaflan across bogland to the island of Derrynabrone located 600m to the NE of the monastery. Several trackways visible in adjoining bog to E of monastery uncovered by peat-milling operations. Described as a trackway (L 600m) constructed with oak planks laid down about 3 feet apart and covered by about 2 feet of clay (NMI file). This causeway ran from the area marked 'Gobban Saer's Grave' on the 1903 ed. OS 6-inch map in a NE direction to the bog Island of Derrynabrone located approx. 600m away. In the latin 'Lives of St. Ruadhan of Lorrha' there is a story about a causeway traversing the bog between the monastery of Derryvella and the monstery of Derrynaflan (Byrne 1980, 116). According to the story Bishop Columbanus, son of Dar Aine, of Daire Mar, sent Ruadan and his monks a present of a cask of butter in a cart drawn by two oxen, for whom a wide firm path miraculously appeared through the great bog of Lurga which lies between the two churches (ibid.).
