Mill in Ruins — Lickfinn (crohane Par.)

In woodland on W side of steep river valley in upland region with nearby Lickfinn House (TS054-103----) 120m to N. Indicated as Mill in Ruins on first edition OS 6-inch map. Large impressive rectangular building (L 6m; H 4m; wall T 1.2m) constructed with roughly coursed limestone rubble covered in moss and vegetation located on edge of river valley and may be the remains of a mill mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-6). The remains consists of the S and partial remains of the W wall and recently collapsed E wall of this building. Evidence of base-batter visible on surviving S wall which has large hole (Wth 3m; H 1m) at the base of the S face and recent collapse of the E wall face which faced onto river. Possible window ope in SW angle of building some evidence of brick in this ope possibly evidence of re-use in a later period. Building is in a dangerous condition with recent wall collapse into adjoining stream, impossible to get access into structure and to take any internal measurements due to cover of vegetation and dangerous condition of structure. Possible silted up mill pond area to the NE of mill building which now consists of wet waterlogged area which has been filled in by land reclamation in the early 1900s. In the Civil Survey the lands of Lickfinn were owned by James Earle of Ormond upon which stood the seat of a mill (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 134).
