What is recorded here

In grassland at base of an E-facing slope of rising ground in upland region with good views from N through E to S, higher ground to W. Castle had been provisionally located to Ballyowen House which is a mid-18th-century six-bay three-storey house over a basement with central breakfront with no evidence of earlier fabric. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as a 'small old castle wanting repaire' and Walter Sall of Garrane is listed as proprietor in 1640 (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 243). Castle remains unlocated within the townland. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
