Wooden Br. — Dundrum

Only the wall facings of a stone abutment for a stone bridge crossing the Multeen river on the estate of Dundrum House survives on the E and W faces of the river bank. This bridge probably replaced an earlier bridge which was indicated as being wooden on the first ed. OS 6-inch map. Large mound of rubble on the E bank of the river probably represents the remains of the destroyed masonry bridge. This was probably an estate bridge of the estates of Dundrum House (built c. 1730) and probably post-1700 in date. In 1991 two surviving stone piers of a three-span bridge were recorded (SMR file 1991), the pile of rubble on the E bank probably represents the remians of these stone piers which have been removed from the river. This was classified in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1997) as an 'Bridge possible'. Following field inspection this was found to be a bridge of post-1700 date.
