Castle depicted in this area on the Strafford Survey of 1637 (NLI 16.I.17[13]) and mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'on the lands of Ballyngarrane, The ould Walls of a destroyed castle irrepairable' (Simington 1934, vol.2, 90). The castle was provisionally located to Grovestown House, however, this is a two-storey early to mid-18th-century L-plan farmhouse with no remains of any earlier fabric. The castle remains unlocated within the townland.
