Cappagh Ho. — Cappagh (toem Par.)

On a SSW-facing slope of low rising ground in undulating countryside with good extensive views with a nearby well (TS051-004----) c. 100m to the SE. This castle/house is not visible at ground level. It is described by White (1892, 59) as consisting of the 'old walls of the castle or residence at Cappagh are still to be seen in the garden of the more modern residence'. The walls of the castle/house were levelled some years ago. Only the N wall of the walled garden, mentioned above, survives which belonged to the surviving Cappagh House, located to the N of the wall. Cappagh House is a two phase construction, the rear possibly dates to the early 18th century while the front of the house appears to be of 19th-century date. Seymour (1917, 41) assigns a date of the early 18th century on the basis of John White's will dated to 1719 whom he considered was responsible for the construction of Cappagh House. The castle may have been the remains of the building described in the Civil Survey as 'the walls of a stone house in Cappagh' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 76). Seymour (1917, 40-41) disagrees with White and suggests the castle at Cappagh was located in the village of Cappaghwhite. There may have been a stone house and a castle in Cappagh, one possibly located at Cappagh House while the precise location of the other (TS051-048----) is unknown.
