What is recorded here

On poorly drained gentle SW-facing slope of rising grassland in upland area, with good views from E through S to W. Overgrown large raised circular area (diam. 45m N-S; 55m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Base Wth 4-8m; top Wth 1.5-4m; int. H 0.7m ext. H 1.3m) visible at NE only elsewhere it has been reduced to a scarp (H 1-1.5m) and wide waterlogged outer fosse (base Wth 4m; top Wth 8m ext. D 0.7-1m). The outer fosse appears to have been widened possibly to accommodate the drainage channels of the adjoining fields. No entrance feature visible, modern gap (Wth 3m) in perimeter of monument at W and two more cattle gaps (avg. Wth 1.5m) in scarp at N and NE. Large ringfort situated on wet poorly drained land with wet outer fosse acting like a moat. Small stream running downslope runs into the outer fosse at W and exits at S as indicated on OS 6-inch map. Field boundaries to N have now been removed and replaced with drainage channels which exit into the fosse along the N side of the monument. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
