On a slight rise of flat poorly drained grassland at the foothills of the Slieveardagh hills with a deer park (TS048-47----) 300m to the E. The ruins of an 18th/19th-century farmhouse and outhouses are located where the 17th-century house may have been located. In the Kilcooley papers John Bird is listed as the main tenant of Poynstown in 1663 and part of his tenancy was to demolish the castle and to build within two years a house of stone and lime with a slate roof, thirty feet [9.1m] long and to plant an orchard and garden (Neely 1983, 33). The walled garden or orchard to the E of farmyard complex may be remains of a 17th-century orchard. Though the 17th-century house was not visible it may be incorporated somewhere in the farmyard complex.
