What is recorded here

In tillage on an E-facing slope of rising ground in undulating countryside with good views in all directions, Killough Hill to W. Heavily overgrown, defensive ringfort consists of a circular area (int. diam. 28m N-S; overall diam. c. 60m N-S) enclosed by a poorly preserved wide, flat-topped earth and stone bank (base Wth. 4m; top Wth 1.7m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.8m) reduced to a scarp in places, fosse (base Wth. 3m; top Wth. 6m; ext. D 1m) and outer bank (base Wth. 5m; top Wth. 1.5m; int. H 1.7m; ext. H 1.5m) which is intersected by a modern road at the N. An outer external fosse (Wth 3m; ext. D 0.2m) is visible on the S side only. A sketch plan and section of the monument from the 1950s shows the outer fosse surrounding the whole monument, except the NW quadrant (OPW files). The S half of the ringfort is better preserved, the presence of a road going around the N half of monument has resulted in the destruction of the outer bank and external fosse in this half. There is a causewayed entrance gap (Wth 3m) at the NE. Considerable damage has been caused to the outer bank by tree root damage. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
