Tomb — chest tomb in Kilcoolyabbey

In the E recess of the S wall of the chancel of Kilcooly Abbey (TS043-034001-). This end slab (L 0.74m; H 0.53m) from an altar tomb is currently placed at the western end of a Cantwell/Butler altar tomb (TS043-034025-) of 1528 but this does not appear to be its original location. It is carved in relief, depicting three apostles, each within a semi-circular headed niche (Wth 0.2-0.22m) divided by twisted columns (Hunt 1974, 229). The figures represented are St James the Major with a scallop shell in his hat, a travelling staff in his left hand, a book in his right and a purse hanging from his belt, St Andrew with a saltire cross and St Peter holding two keys in his right hand and a book in his left hand. According to Hunt (ibid.) these figures appear to date to the later half of the 16th century and are evidently products of the O'Tunney workshop, though the twisted columns supporting semi-circular arches are not typical and the order of the saints is the reverse of their normal positions.
