In the centre of Gortnahoo village on a slight rise of ground with good views in all directions. A 19th century cruciform-plan church is situated in the NW quadrant of a small square-shaped graveyard (dims. NE-SW 37m; SE-NW 38m), with no headstone pre-1800 visible in the graveyard. The earliest headstones are located immediately SE of the S wall of the church, elsewhere the headstones date from the 1900s. It is depicted as an RC chapel on 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. According to Lewis (1837, 231) human bones were discovered when the foundations of the existing chapel were being dug. These were locally believed to belong to those who died in a battle at Ballysloe between the Kings of Leinster and Munster.
