The Civil Survey (1654-6) describes 'The Castle and Bawne of Fenor inhabited' as 'a good castle' with Pierce Butler listed as proprietor of the lands in 1640 (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 101, 120). It is situated on high ground, in pasture, with good views in all directions. A church (TS043-003003-) and graveyard (TS043-003004-) are located 130m to the SW. The castle (TS043-003001-) and associated bawn are not visible at ground level. Modern farm buildings are located on the site of the bawn which was located to the W of the castle. The bawn is described in the OS Letters as 'the remains of outer walls are also visible but they do not appear to be as old as the castle itself' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1 160).
