The Civil Survey (1654-6) describes 'The Castle and Bawne of Fenor inhabited' as 'a good castle' with Pierce Butler listed as proprietor of the lands in 1640 (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 101, 120). It is situated on high ground, in pasture, with good views in all directions. A church (TS043-003003-) and graveyard (TS043-003004-) are located 130m to the SW. The castle and associated bawn (TS043-003002-) are not visible at ground level. The castle is described in the OS Letters as 'a high but slender fragment ….Only a part of the north and west walls of this building remains, five feet ten inches [1.8m] in thickness and about forty feet [12m] in height' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 160). According to the OS Letters a house was built at the foot of the castle by the Turvin family which appears to have been abandoned in the early 1700s (ibid.).
