Situated in gently undulating terrain. Described in the OS Letters as 'the ruins of an old house or castle called Caislean Dubh or Black Castle' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 178). The site has been levelled and its site occupied by modern barns and sheds behind old farm buildings. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002).
