Grave Yard — Barnane (barnane-Ely Par.)

Situated on a low rise in undulating land in a mountainous region with Barnane tower house (TN028-046----) and Barnane House 610m to the NW. Rectangular shaped graveyard (dims. 30m N-S; 50m E-W) enclosed by a stone wall of 19th century date with entrance gate and stile located off centre to W in S wall, poorly preserved medieval church ruins (TN028-053001-) stand in N quadrant of graveyard. Immediately outside the graveyard wall are the remains of a shallow narrow fosse of post-medieval date which encloses the boundary wall. Several architectural fragments belonging to the medieval church have been reused as grave markers and are visible protruding from the surface of the graveyard. The private burial ground of the Carden family of Barnane House occupies the E end of the graveyard and is separated from the rest of the graveyard by a stone wall running S off the SE angle of the medieval church as shown on the 25-inch OS map. This private burial area contains the private burial vault of the Carden family and is entered through a gateway located in the centre of the E wall of the graveyard. On the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map the N wall of the medieval church formed the N boundary wall of the graveyard. On the revised 1901 ed. 25-inch OS map the graveyard boundary wall has been extended to the N of the church. The graveyard contains memorials from the post medieval period onwards.
