Outlined — Ballynaclogh

Medieval parish church ruins (TN027-003002-) of Ballynaclogh (Weyperous) also known as Vado Petroso (Stony Ford) stands in the E quadrant of a rectangular-shaped graveyard, immediately SE of an early 19th century Protestant church. Listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Killaloe in 1302 where it is referred to as 'Church de Vado petroso' (CDI, vol. 5, 301). A nave and chancel church built of roughly coursed limestone rubble which has been heavily repointed. The church is entered through a pointed doorway in the S wall of the nave. A gap in the opposite wall has been widened recently and a second doorway inserted. The nave is lit by two opposing single-light windows at the E end of the N and S walls. Some dressed limestone quoins survive and of particular note is a sheela-na-gig (TN027-003003-) carved in relief on the S face of a quoin in the SW angle. Graveyard described in 1840 as follows; 'There is a large grave yard much in use attached to this old Church, and immediately to the north west of it there is a handsome modern Church’ (O’Flanagan 1930, 15) Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien.
