Situated on a low rounded hillock in undulating countryside. The OS Letters describe the castle as surviving 24ft (7.3m) in length and measuring 6ft 3 inches (1.8m) thick (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 13). Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as a 'castle and some thatch cabins' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 139). Not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002).
