What is recorded here

Located either at a break in a fairly steep N-facing slope or on gently undulating ground at the base of this slope. It is not possible to determine the exact location as there is no visible trace of this site at ground level. This area, adjacent to Roscrea, is described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as having 'one castle [and] two turretts' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 29) and would seem to refer to this site. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002).
