Situated immediately S of Borrisokane, 'Shanavoola' is depicted on the 2nd (1903) ed. OS 6-inch map as a sub-denomination of Shesheraghmore townland, the same townland which Borrisokane is located within. According to the OS Namebooks (O'Donovan et al. C.1840) 'Shanavalla signifies old village. It is a subdenomination of Shesheraghmore, said that a village of that name once stood here - the foundations of some of the houses have been recently discovered during the progress of cultivation as also human bones & old coins etc.'. An old roadway is depicted on the 2nd ed. OS 6-inch map running through the area called Shanavoola. On the 1st ed. map this area is called 'Shanvally' and several houses are depicted along this roadway. The limits of Shanavoola are not defined and thus the area could not be constrained.
