Situated on flat pasture with good views in all directions. Gleeson refers to Borrisokane as having been an Anglo-Norman parish (1951-2, 104). Though there is no visible surviving medieval fabric in the town, reused fragments of an earlier medieval church were incorporated into the nineteenth-century Protestant church (TN010-006001) at the SE end of the town (pers. comm. Con Manning). In the seventeenth century a retired Cromwellian soldier, Captain James Stopford, was granted land in Borrisokane and under his influence other disbanded soldiers settled in the town (Levinstone Cooney 1975, 5).
