Wedge tomb in Tawnymucklagh

On rolling pasture about 600m W of Lough Gara. A W-facing gallery (min. L 6.7m) is divided by a septal-stone into a portico and main chamber and is surrounded by the remains of an outer-wall. The structure, which is built with quite small orthostats, stands in a low mound (10m E-W; max. 8m N-S; H 0.5m). The portico (L 1.5m) is formed by two stones at the S and another, now fallen, at the N side. The septal-stone is broken in two pieces. Between the N end of the septal-stone and the N side of the main chamber there is a small stone. The main chamber (min. L 5m; Wth 1.2m at septal-stone, 0.9m towards opposite end) is represented by six stones to the N and five to the S. At the inner end of the S side there is a partly buried stone of uncertain function. There is a displaced stone about mid-way along the main chamber. The outer-wall at the N is represented by seven stones and that at the S also by seven stones. A partly buried stone immediately outside the easternmost outer-wall stone at the S seems to be prostrate. The back of the outer-walling is represented by a single orthostat. Two facade-stones, both fallen to W, linked the southern outer-wall to the front of the portico. A single facade-stone, a thin slab, stands just forward of the northern outer-wall.
