Barrow — ring-barrow in Coolrawer

In pasture, on top of a low rise, with bog to N and S. A slightly raised area (c. 20m N-S; c. 23m E-W) surrounded by a wide fosse (Wth 3.4m) and a broad external earthen bank (Wth 7.3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.65m). The fosse appears in parts to be higher than the surrounding ground level. From N-NNE the earthen bank is evident only as a barely perceptible rise. The bank is narrower and higher for short sections along the E and W arcs. This may be due to disturbance by a lane and farmyard buildings abutting the bank to E and W respectively as shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. A depression remains where the farm building once stood. Numerous gaps were noted in the bank. The interior is level and raised at max. 0.45m above the base of the fosse. The barrow is grass-covered and heavily poached by cattle. According to local information, it was used as a children's burial ground (SL042-001001-).
