Enclosure in Treanmore (corran By.)

In rough pasture, located on a small terrace on the SE-facing slope of a ridge, overlooked immediately to NW by Kesh Corran. The ridge flanks the W side of a narrow pass, traversed now by a by-road. There is a settlement cluster (SL040-067001-) at the base of the W-facing slope of the parallel ridge, which flanks the E side of the pass. Views are blocked NW−E by higher ground, but the terrace has excellent views SE−SW over a broad sweep of undulating countryside, with a rath (SL040-069----) clearly visible on a hill top 335m to S. This enclosure is not shown on the 1837 and 1914 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a roughly circular area (23m E−W; 20m N−S) defined by low remnants of a wall. The enclosure encompasses most of the level space available on the small terrace. The N arc is cut into the rising ridge slope, so that it is defined by an inward-facing scarp (H 0.8-1.4m), which is topped by the ruined, grass-covered remnants of a later E−W field wall. At NE−WNW, the enclosing wall can be traced as a low, moss-covered rise or stone bank (Wth 1m; H 0.1-0.2). At SSE−SW it coincides with the break of slope of the terrace, where the ridge slope falls away steeply. The interior is level. A wall, evident as a low, grass-covered stony bank (Wth 0.6-1m), extend across the S half of the interior on a roughly E−W axis. This wall must post-date the enclosure, as it appears to continue beyond the enclosure, downslope to SE. In the N half of the interior, a low, sod-covered fragment of a N−S wall extends from the scarp at N for 5-6m to S through the centre of the interior; it is possible that this is a remnant of a rectangular structure or house, but the remains are exiguous, and this interpretation is uncertain.
