What is recorded here

According to Wood-Martin (1882, 103), 'St. Fechin, in the seventh century, founded an abbey' which he located 'probably in the townland of Abbeyville' but 'scarcely a trace of it remains'. The exact location of this is not known and no such site is listed by Gwynn and Hadcock (1970). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
