What is recorded here

In 1836 a 'Giant's Grave' was recorded in Cloonameehan South (OSNB, vol. 1, 232). However as other features referred to in the OS Name Book reference are in the adjoining townland of Rinnarogue there is a possibility that this feature may also have been in Rinnarogue which is on OS 6-inch map 39. It may be that the possible megalithic tomb is in that part of Cloonameehan South which is also on OS 6-inch map 39. In any case the feature in question has not been identified and its nature remains uncertain. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
