What is recorded here

In pasture, on a low rise on a S-facing slope. A circular slightly raised area (int. diam. c. 7m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.55m). A small hole was recently dug in the centre and there is a small quarry immediately to SW. The S portion of the interior is raised c. 0.45m to compensate for the hillslope. Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure but inadvertently named 'Megalithic Monument (Site of)' on the 1941-2 OS 6-inch map. The OS Name Books of the 1941-2 survey noted that the name applied to 'an ancient mound site of a Giants Grave' (Ó Nualláin 1989, 99, no. 26). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
